Will Pusey reached the milestone age of 8 in June 2002 and participated in this sacred ordinance a became an official member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. ballet ('ba-"lA) noun. 1. a theatrical art form using dancing, music and scenery to convey a story or theme. 2. Arianne, 4 and Lizzie, 13 are taking ballet lessons and participated in a small production of The Nutcracker this December. 3. Jenifer, Harrison, 9 and Will were involved too -- Jenifer on making the "lollipop" scenery and swords for the mice; Harrison and 'Will were rats eerr mice (no real dancing required). basketball (hoopus-"r-us-&s) sport. 1. a post-modern religious avocation and ritual performed with two teams of five acolytes, a ball, a hard floor and two opposing graven images with round protruding rings with netting attached. A basketball 2. Harrison and Will both play with the Bruins basketball organization. In February, Harrison's team won the Arapahoe Youth League Championship for their division. The boys' indoctrination in the true sport is not quite complete, but their father is hopeful. b flat ('bE 'flat) noun. 1. second class apartment in London. 2. musical key to which a standard soprano clarinet is tuned. 3. one of the many notes Scott needed to play in his continuing journey out of clarinet retirement; highlights included participation in the orchestra forMy Beloved Christ  in October, conducted by Jenifer (see MIDI, this dictionary) and a solo, "Goin' Home" at his Grandma Seely's funeral in early December (see transpostion, this dictionary). A clarinet chinook (sh&-'nuk) noun. 1. traditional native name for a species of salmon also called "king" or "spring" salmon. Scott found his way to Langara Island in the Queen Charlotte's for the third straight summer and found that by calling the fish "chinook" they more readily agreed to be caught. Scott enjoyed fishing "unguided" with his fishing pal Phil Desjardine. His "sacrifice" of not attending his 20 year high school reunion yielded a lot of chinook to feed the family. cud (kud) noun. /cudaecious[ness]/ /The Cud/ 1. something a cow chews (we won't go into it). 2. a nickname for Arianne Pusey. Etymology: from English cuddle or cuddly. Use: Where is the Cud? or You are such a Cud, a cuddly cudaecious cuddlebug! eight and unders (m&ay-hem and kay-ahss) n. 1. popular form of billiards played in English pubs. 2. designation of Willow Creek Wahoo's Swim Team for the swimmers under 8 years of age. Jenifer volunteered her time as a swim coach for this age group this summer. Lizzie, Harrison and Will all competed for the Wahoos and Will won an award for "Most Improved Swimmer" for the "eight and unders" Thanks, Coach! 8 v 8 ("awl-mOst sok'-er) noun. 1. internet chat room emoticon depicting two guys in eyeglasses sharing a common v-shaped nose. 2. junior level soccer with 8 players to a side. Will moved into 8v8 this fall and turned into a speedy and aggressive defensive stopper. We found that a meal of popovers for breakfast seemed to inspire his play, so in tradition to sports superstitions everywhere, this became our standard pre-soccer game meal. Harrison played 8 v 8 with Scott as coach. fashion ('brand nAm-s oh-n'-lee) adj. 1. Roxy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy, American Eagle, Lei, Express, Mudd, Adidas, Sketchers, Steve Madden or any other brand the girls at West Middle School seem to favor from month to month. |
gortex ('gOr-tex) noun. 1. miracle fabric relied on heavily by the Pusey family during their trip to the nation's capital in October for fall break. The intrepid travelers endured several rainy days but managed to see all the major sites on their list. We also enjoyed visiting with Jenifer's sister and Andrea and family who recently moved to the Baltimore area and an afternoon with Scott's Uncle David Pusey. metal mouth (me-t'l 'mauth) noun. 1. new rock group with the successful 2002 debut album, "Brace Yourself" with new frontman, Harrison Pusey and featuring veteran ortho-alto Lizzie Pusey. Managed by Scott and Jenifer Pusey, this duo shines brightly and is headed straight to the top! MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interfacing) acronym. 1. digital protocol which saved Jenifer's sanity during her preparations for a production of My Beloved Christ  in October. Jenifer obtained handwritten conductor's scores from the composer and needed to separate out parts for the various instruments. We got our ancient Ensoniq keyboard to interface with our music composition software and saved weeks of time! Also on the music front, the kids continue to take piano lessons. Looking ahead for 2003, Harrison and Will are going to start viola lessons and Lizzie is going to learn guitar. six sigma (st&-'tis-tik[s], 'dam st&-'tis-tik[s] and lies) noun. 1. statistical term for measuring how far a given process deviates from perfection or "zero defects." In 2002, Scott began a sabbatical from Johns Manville's legal department to join the company's six sigma program for business process improvement. He still describes himself as an attorney (six sigma "black belt" can be a bit unnerving) or more recently as a "recovering" attorney. 1sleep ('slEp) n. 2sleep v. /'slept/ /sleeping/ 1. an act of voluntary or involuntary unconsciousness, prone to occur to teenagers during times when normal humans are ordinarily awake and alert. 2. Lizzie is perfecting the art of this activity and continues to emphasize its importance in her overall health program. transposition ("trans(t)s-p&-'zi-sh&n) noun. 1. to write or perform a musical composition in a different key. 2. to change in form or nature; to transfer from one place to another. Our family experienced both definitions this year. Jenifer, along with her other musical activities, enjoyed the ease of transposing clarinet and other music with her music composition software. Both Jenifer and Scott mourned the passing of their last two living grandparents. Jenifer's Grandfather Pierce Bringhurst died in February. Jenifer and Harrison attended his funeral in Utah. Scott's grandmother, Vaun Seely, passed away in late November and the entire family was able to participate in her funeral services. Our children were blessed to know five of their great-grandparents. We know that in both cases, while we enjoyed earthly family reunions to honor these beloved members of our family, there were great reunions happening on the other side as well. vinn skiløpet ("vin-ski-low-pet) Norwegian. 1. in English, roughly "win the ski race." 2. We heard phrases such as this at Soldier Hollow, the venue for nordic skiing at the 2002 Olympics. This was our favorite venue, mainly because Grandpa and Grandma Pusey were working there. Besides cross country skiing and biathlon competitions, we also enjoyed ski jumping and women's ice hockey and fun with cousins on our quick trip to the Olympics. security measures (si-'kyur-&-tE me-zh&rs) noun. 1. meaures taken to guard against terrorism, sabotage, crime or attack. From the elaborate and well-run security checks at the Olympics to the new security procedures at the airport, the careful security measures at many of the sites in Washington, D.C. and our own schools in Centennial, Colorado, in 2002, the Pusey family felt blessed to be protected and living in relative peace and security in this troubled world. |
