Stages 1-12:
              Team Pusey Rocks Cycling World

In mid-May 2001, Team Pusey rocked the cycling world by purchasing three new bicycles. For the first time in over 14 years, Scott actually had a bike of his own and Jen and Lizzie upgraded. The parents' bikes were actually an anniversary present to each other. Team Pusey chose their Ford Windstar van as their official vehicle and outfitted the machine with a 4 bike rack sticking out the trailer hitch. With two more little kid bikes on top, plus Arianne's bike trailer, Team Pusey really travels in a stylish lurch up the mountains of Colorado.

Scott and kids in Glenwood Canyon
Prior to May, Team Pusey was in training. Our team trainers suggested that skiing is a great way to get ready for those miles on the road and mountain trails when summer comes. So since our last years space odyssey, we docked our spaceships and traded our rocket packs for skis and bikes. Jen and the three older kids went skiing a few times when the kids had breaks from school and when Jen could take a break from arranging music and conducting rehearsals and when we could get a friend to care for Arianne. Scott even managed to ski once with the family. He and Jen traded off during the day caring for Ari on the mountain one way or another. One ski resort we like, Arapahoe Basin, has next -to-the-lifts-parking which is affectionately termed "beach parking" -- available for the early birds. On this entire-family-ski-day we parked on the beach and Ari played in/on the snow and sledded on the bunny hill.

While the bikes are in storage this winter, we are looking forward to skiing this year and hope to let Ari hit the slopes!

In late March/early April, since the Tour de Pusey 2001 had not really begun yet, we toured de Young's for spring break. Scott drove the family down to California. On his way to the airport for a business trip (boondoggle) (“customer” golf in Scottsdale? come on) we all went to Universal Studios. The tour de Young was a good 10-day 'race', a small warm-up for the bigger races to come and a good R&R break for Jen after Women at the Well.

In early May, Scott had a customer event in New York City and he “dragged” Jen along. On a Saturday morning, instead of going on tours with the company folks, the team co-captains of Team Pusey decided to take a chance to do some additional cross-training and ran in the Revlon Race for Women, a 5K run walk through Central Park. We joined up with several of our Manhattan friends who were running in a group sponsored by the LDS church.

Tour de Pusey 2001 had its first real test in a mountain stage during Memorial Day weekend. We camped at Lake Dillon, near Breckenridge and rode our bikes all around our camping area. We surprised our Pusey cousins, Merlon, Terri and family who live in nearby Frisco by showing up to church on Sunday morning. (We won't go into the detail of how we got the campfire stench off – let's just say it was a sponge bath extraordinaire). We had a great afternoon and evening roasting marshmallows and just relaxing with all the cousins. Our Official Team Pusey photographer, Jen, was on her bike all the time so we have no pictures of the team in action!

As Tour de Pusey 2001 entered summer, we found plenty of time for more cross-training (next year, a triathlon?) with both Lizzie and Harrison on the Wahoo's swim team. Jenifer, Team Pusey's Official Photographer did some freelance work for the swim team with her new camera.

4th of July found Team Pusey heading to Thermopolis, Wyoming with our good friends, the Tippets. The highlight of this stage of the 2001 tour was a raft trip down the Big Horn River. Jenifer, the smart one, was properly attired.

We had numerous local short rides throughout the summer (10 milers). Team Pusey is blessed to be based in an area with an abundance of trails and great places to ride. We worked a lot on "staying on the right side." We are going to work on drafting and breakaway techniques next year.

In light of the terrorist attacks in September, we decided to postpone our planned October trip to the Washington D.C. area with Jen's parents and all of Team Pusey. Instead, we had a great visit from Grandpa and Grandma Young to Denver. Grandma Young celebrated a birthday with us and due to a lack of proper candles or ornamentation or merely as a strange joke, her cake was decorated to suggest that she was turning 103. Poor Will really believed the whole thing because when we were later having a conversation about some old folks we know, he remarked that Grandma gets around great for someone in their”100's” .

For fall break Team Pusey tackled the final mountain stage of the year with an overnight trip to Glenwood Springs to dip in the hot springs and bike along the Colorado river.

Thanksgiving found us touring to Thermopolis again where we enjoyed an excellent combination of fun, feasting, friends and a dip at the famous hot springs.

As 2001 closes, our hearts remain heavy with mourning for those innocent people who perished on September 11. We are, despite the grief and anger we share with all Americans and other civilized people around the world, hopeful. We have great hope that peace will ultimately prevail even as the hand of justice may cause additional hardships. Our family has found an anchor and solace in our faith. We pray that all people may turn their hearts to God our Creator and diligently seek Him and His peace.
