The downtown part of our trip began with a visit to the site of the World Trade Center, now known to the world as "Ground Zero." Although we could see little in the way of the destruction and mostly evidence of rebuilding and rejuvenation, our thoughts, of course, turned to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Now that we can comment from a distance, we observed a great change in the tone, the emotions and demeanor of the city and more particularly in its people. We felt that New York has a somewhat calmer and more peaceful shroud or aura surrounding it. Born of tragedy, this feeling is tangible to those like us who knew New York well before that fateful day and have returned to experience its terrible yet hopeful aftermath. Our downtown jaunts took us to the Statue of Liberty, South Street Seaport, Canal Street, Chinatown and Little Italy. Lizzie, from her earliest days as a young child in NYC earned the nickname -- "the little negotiator." This stems from her tendency to try to talk her parents out of what they want or want her to do and into what she wants. Lizzie, put her negotiating skills to good use on Canal Street and scored big (in her view) with handbags, watches and the like. Before coming to New York, the closest the kids got to Little Italy was the chain restaurant, Maggiano's. So of course we had dinner at a local joint on Mulberry Street and experienced the real thing. As a final downtown activity before we left the city, we convinced the kids to go on a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge. Poor Arianne was so tired that we gave up halfway across and Dad got to carry her back to the subway.
