Jenifer and Scott moved to Morningside Heights in 1987 when Scott started his first year at Columbia Law School. Our first home was at 431 Riverside Drive. This just so happens to be the first home of Elizabeth Pusey. So of course we had a pilgrimage in and around the old neighborhood. Lizzie returns weighing 100+ pounds more and 40+ inches taller.

We also lived at 515 W. 110th Street or as we liked to call it 515 Cathedral Parkway which is technically correct and has an oh so much more sophisticated ring to it . . . We showed Harrison his first home and he claimed to remember it even though he only lived there a little more than a year before moving to Westchester County.

We found Columbia University to be much the same with a few new buildings here and there. The Law School completed an addition since we left and now the "Toaster" looks a bit more like, well a toaster. The Morningside Heights neighborhood seemed just a bit more scruffy back in 1987; we saw the evidence of a bit more gentrification along Broadway, which seems a bit sad in that we happened to catch Columbia Bagels on its very last day of business and the nearby fruit stand was already gone. The Cathedral is all that much closer to "completion" (they have gotten some more apostles carved by the front doors).

We reminisced about our first Christmas in 515 where Scott suggested we get a big tree to take advantage of the high ceilings. We bought a very large and very tall tree on Broadway in the pouring rain and lugged it back to the apartment by means of Scott's back, a wire grocery card and navigational assistance from Jenifer (and Lizzie in her stroller). The only problem with a very large and very tall and very wet tree is that such a tree will not fit into a standard size Christmas tree stand. We sawed and filed and made it work somehow.

A trip to New York is not complete without some real NY pizza, so the Pusey's patronized the Coronet pizza and enjoyed some large greasy slices. We also had a good visit with our friend Kimberley Stewart who still lives in the neighborhood.
